Ephesians 4:1

Walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called. In my day to day life am I walking according to the calling that I profess? The best answer I can give is I hope so, and that I’m trying. In the devotional Strength For Today John MacArthur says “You may ask, Is it possible to walk this way? Yes, but only on this basis: you must devote yourself to be strengthened with the power of the Holy Spirit”.

Walking in a manner worthy of the calling cannot be accomplished under our own power. Walking into church once a week is not enough to empower us to walk in a worthy manner. In order to walk in the manner worthy we need to study His word, we need to pray diligently, and we need to rely on the Holy Spirit. Relying on my knowledge and strength always results in wandering off the trail and staggering under the weight of sin. I can remember being so drunk that I couldn’t even crawl home. The attempt left me looking like I tried to eat asphalt at 60 mph. I still remember the frustration and confusion of not being able to control my own limbs. I’ve been sober for over 30 years now, and although I don’t dine on asphalt anymore, I can still experience that frustration and confusion whenever I sin. Paul talks about this in Romans 7:13-23. The only way to combat this is by arming ourselves with the word of God, and with the power of the Holy Spirit! “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?”. The Holy Spirit that’s who! So let’s feast on the word of God, and draw on the power of the Holy Spirit in order to walk the narrow path that leads to eternal life, and not the path of human strength and understanding that leads to death and separation.
