Romans 12:1-2 says “I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect”. The old adage says when in Rome do as the Romans do. This however is exactly what this passage is warning against. Paul is telling us to be transformed by the diligent study of God’s word, and not to do as the Romans do. If the people around us are telling off color jokes that would not be pleasing to God do we join in and have a good laugh or do we excuse ourselves from the situation? If something or someone torques us off at work do we get angry and cuss, swear, and fume, or do we show the grace and humility of Christ? If I’m driving and someone cuts me off, do I flip them off in return and pass them so they can see my WWJD bumper sticker? I hope not. Luke 6:45 says “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks”. Let’s all purpose ourselves to start each day in prayer and the study of God’s word. Instead of conforming to the world and taking on the mannerisms and attitudes of those around us we are to be diligent to show only that which is inside of us which hopefully is Christ.
