Psalm 51 was part of my reading plan this morning. Psalm 51 has always been my favorite chapter in the old testament if not the entirety of the bible. Psalm 51 is a written record of King David’s prayer of repentance following his adultury with Bathsheeba and his subsequent murder of her husband. He begins by pleading for mercy, and petitions God to wash away his sin. He then prays that he be given a clean heart, and that a right spirit be within him. He begs to not be cast away and have the Holy Spirit removed from him. He asks that the joy of his salvation be restored so he can be a good witness and win souls to God. He ends by expressing knowledge that God doesn’t desire sacrifices. What God truly desires from us is broken spirits, and repentant hearts. It’s this spirit that made David a man after God’s own heart. He wasn’t by any means a perfect man, but when his sin was brought into the light of day he immediately repented and begged for forgiveness. The primary desire of David was always to please God. And like Jesus said “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” John 14:21
